I read the story of the Little Mermaid many times when I was little.
（小さい頃何度も読んだ人魚姫のお話。）


On a stormy night, she rescued a prince who had fallen off a boat, and the little mermaid fell in love with him.
（嵐の夜、船から落ちた王子様を助けたのがキッカケで、人魚姫は恋をする。）


The little mermaid asks the sea witch to give her a human leg in exchange for her beautiful voice, so she can go on land to meet her prince.
（人魚姫は海の魔女にお願いして、美しい声と引き換えに人間の足を貰って陸にあがり王子様に会いに行く。）


However, the mermaid's love is not fulfilled and she turns into a bubble.
（けれど、人魚姫の恋は成就することなく彼女は泡になってしまう。）


Many of Andersen's stories are somewhat sad and beautiful.
（アンデルセンのお話はどこか切なくも美しいものが多い。）


I was so moved when I read the scene where she traded her beautiful voice for a human leg and went to meet the prince.
（あたしは何度も美しい声と引き換えにしてまで、人間の足を手に入れ王子様に会いに行くシーンを読んでは感動した。）


However

What awaited them was a cruel reality.
（そこに待っていたのは残酷な現実。）


So,
（そう）


To get something in exchange for something else.
（何かを引き換えにして、何かを手に入れることに）


There is no success.
（成功はない。）


Are you sure about that?
（本当にそうかしら。）


Because it's up to you to decide what is a success and what is a failure.
（だって何が成功で、何が失敗なのか―――自分自身が決めることだもの。）


The little mermaid, though she turns to foam
（人魚姫は泡になっても、）


She must have been happy.
（幸せだったに違いない。）


She is.
（彼女は）



It was a success.
（成功したのだ。）
