「But then again, everyone seemed to be distrustful of foreigners who came out of nowhere.（それにしても、やはりいきなり来た外国人にみんな不信感がありそうだったな）」


とっくりから猪口にお酒を注いでいるジェイクが、どこか可笑しそうに笑った。


「Mistrust, or more clearly, suspicion. Especially when the story about the TOYO Express thing came out, they started to suspect a connection with me, although it was credible. Couldn't you have found a better excuse?
（不信感、と言うよりハッキリ言って疑われてるわ。特にTOYOエクスプレスの件の話が出た時、信憑性はあったけれど、あたしとの繋がりを疑い始めた。もっとましな言い訳無かったわけ？）」


あたしの言葉にジェイクは軽く肩をすくめた。


「There is clearly no better material than that. That Chairman Kanna was the only one who didn't seem to suspect it.
（あれ以上の材料はハッキリ言ってない。あの神流会長だけは疑ってなかったみたいだが）」


「Yes. I have laid the groundwork for you from me to the Chairman.
（そうね、会長には根回ししておいたから。あたしからの差し金ってこと）」


おじ様がすんなりあたしの提案を受け入れてくれて良かった。……でも通訳のことは聞いていなかった。


もしかして……おじ様面白がってる節がある？？


「That makes sense, But that chairman's son seemed suspicious of me, though. His name is Kanna, Kate, did you say? He looked like a decorative bloke.
（なるほど、しかしあの会長の息子は疑ってる様子だったけれどね。神流 啓人とか言ったか？一見お飾りのぼんくらに見えたが）」


お飾りのぼんくらぁ？


「It's tricky having him as an enemy. He may look stupid in your eyes, but he is not stupid.
（彼を敵に回すと厄介よ。あなたの目にはそう見えるかもしれないけれど、バカじゃないわ）」


ふん、と言ってやるとジェイクはまたも面白そうに笑った。


「He isn’t stupid. He was the only one who was cooler than anyone else in that place. He was calmly trying to analyse me.（ああ、バカじゃない。あの場の誰よりも彼だけが冷静だった。冷静に―――俺を分析しようとしていた）」


そう、だからあたしも焦った。焦ったせいで墓穴を掘ってしまったこと、啓ならきっと見抜いているだろう。


「You just said you're free, but do you like him?
（君は―――今、フリーと言ったけれど彼が好きなのかい？）」


突然聞かれて、あたしは面食らった。


「What should you say, Who cares.
（何を言い出すの。関係ないじゃないそんなこと）」


I don't like him.（好きじゃない）、とすぐに否定できなかったあたし―――


きっとジェイクにはあたしの気持ち、見抜かれてる……
